Large Redworm

Large Redworm      Strongylus vulgaris

They are no longer the threat that they once were as many wormers are now efficient against them.

Size Appearance

2cm - 5cm long, dark red in colour

Location In Horse

They migrate in blood vessels.  Adults are found in the large intestine

Symptoms

Migrating larval stages damage the lining of the arteries particularly those in the gut.

Severe Colic and even Death
Depression
Unthriftiness

Treatment

The only way to treat large strongyles is with anthelmintics (wormers) containing any of the chemicals ivermectin, moxidectin or benzimidazole.  These chemicals will remove both the migrating larvae and adult worms.

Preventative Measures

• Prevent pasture becoming contaminated by the regular removal of droppings.  This must be at least twice a week during summer months.
• Regular anthelmintics treatment will reduce the number of eggs being laid.
• Avoidance of over crowding 
• Mixed grazing with sheep and cows
